Digital reference terminology published for the automotive sector

Standardized, manufacturer-independent reference terminology for the
automotive sector is now available. It is the outcome of an EU project
which aimed to make it easier for “authorized third parties”
(independent workshops, testing institutes, etc.) to access repair and
maintenance information (RMI) from the vehicle manufacturer (standard EN ISO 18542).

As a central partner, the STAR Group was responsible for providing the initial data pool and providing the terminology manager, and also took on a large part of the project management. In close cooperation with experts from car manufacturers and authorized third parties, searchrelevant English terms were identified, validated and translated into German and French. For the collaborative creation and maintenance, the STAR Group implemented a central, web based workflow solution that is based on WebTerm 7 (terminology management) and STAR CLM (Corporate Language Management).

The aim of this was not to collect as many terms as possible but rather to collect the most suitable terms that represent the entire vehicle. The digital reference terminology currently contains 521 detailed data records in three languages, and it is already available from our cooperation partner DIN Software GmbH. After the initial publication, the experts are already working on the terminology again: Current terms for all vehicle classes are added annually; the planned focus for 2020 is the “heavy duty” sector. The system and the data structure have been designed in such a way that additional sections of standard EN ISO 18542 (e.g. for motorcycles and agricultural vehicles), as well as additional languages, can be integrated without any problems. This means that the new digital terminology can also offer interesting long-term perspectives for the user.
